Montgomery County Criminal Records Search: Cases & Public Records

Montgomery County, Pennsylvania public records

Montgomery County criminal records are not stored in one public database. Court cases and dockets are available through Pennsylvania’s Unified Judicial System, official Common Pleas criminal files are maintained by the Montgomery County Clerk of Courts, statewide criminal-history checks come from Pennsylvania State Police PATCH, and jail, warrant and expungement information follows separate county procedures. This guide shows which official source to use for each task.

Location: Montgomery County, Pennsylvania Judicial District: 38th Judicial District Verified: September 2026
Do not treat an arrest or charge as a conviction. Criminal court records can show accusations that were later withdrawn, dismissed, reduced, resolved through diversion or ended in another disposition. Always check the final outcome.

Start with the type of Montgomery County criminal record you need

The fastest search starts by matching the question to the agency that actually maintains the record. A Pennsylvania criminal-history certificate, county criminal docket and current jail record are different products.

Search Pennsylvania UJS for public Common Pleas and Magisterial District Court docket sheets.

Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office provides public warrant resources and operates the Warrants Division.

How to search Montgomery County criminal court cases online

Pennsylvania’s Unified Judicial System Case Information portal provides free public access to docket sheets for Criminal Courts of Common Pleas and Magisterial District Courts.

Open Public Web Docket Sheets

Use the public case-information area. A secure court or attorney login is not needed for ordinary public docket searching.

Select the correct court level

Choose Criminal Courts of Common Pleas for county-level criminal cases or Magisterial District Courts for preliminary and lower-court matters.

Use the strongest identifier available

A docket number is usually best. When permitted by the search form, participant information and other supported fields can help locate a case.

Narrow to Montgomery County

County filtering is particularly useful for common names and statewide results.

Read the entire case history

Review charges, docket entries, bail, disposition and sentence rather than stopping at the original allegations.

Search official Pennsylvania court records
The online service is free. Pennsylvania UJS identifies its public web docket search as a free public service. A Clerk of Courts office search or certified copy can still have a separate county fee.

Common Pleas and Magisterial District Court records are different

Montgomery County maintains 29 Magisterial District Courts. These courts are the first tier of Pennsylvania’s judicial system and handle criminal preliminary arraignments, preliminary hearings, summary offenses, traffic matters and other proceedings.

Court What you may find Official search path
Magisterial District Court Preliminary arraignments, preliminary hearings, summary criminal matters, traffic cases and related lower-court proceedings. PA UJS Magisterial District Court docket sheets.
Court of Common Pleas Cases held for court, felony and misdemeanor prosecutions, pleas, trials, sentencing and later criminal filings. PA UJS Criminal Courts of Common Pleas docket sheets and Montgomery County Clerk of Courts.
Find a Montgomery County district court
Useful local tip: if you know a criminal matter began before a Magisterial District Judge but cannot find what happened later, search both the MDJ docket and the Court of Common Pleas docket.

How to read a Montgomery County criminal docket

Field What it tells you What not to assume
Docket number Unique court case identifier. It does not by itself tell you the outcome.
Charges Allegations filed against the defendant. A filed charge is not proof of guilt.
OTN Pennsylvania offense-tracking identifier associated with a criminal matter. It is not the same thing as the court docket number.
Bail Bail type, amount and related docket activity when public. Initial bail can later change.
Docket entries Chronological court activity and filings. The newest entry does not always explain the complete history.
Disposition How each charge was resolved. Different counts in one case may have different outcomes.
Sentence Penalty or conditions following a qualifying disposition. Do not infer a sentence from the original charge alone.

Pennsylvania PATCH criminal-history checks

If your goal is a Pennsylvania criminal-history background check rather than a court-case search, use the Pennsylvania State Police PATCH criminal-history service.

UJS court docket

Shows public court case information. Useful for understanding charges, court activity, disposition and sentencing.

PATCH criminal history

Checks information against the Pennsylvania State Police criminal-history database maintained by the Central Repository.

Standard check

$22

Current standard individual criminal-history check fee.

Notarization

+$5

Available for qualifying standard results when notarization is requested.

Volunteer

Free

Qualifying volunteer criminal-history checks are free.

PATCH is Pennsylvania-only. Pennsylvania State Police states that PATCH searches Pennsylvania law-enforcement criminal-history information and is not a federal or nationwide criminal-history search.

Understanding PATCH result status

  • No Record: the submitted information did not return a reportable Pennsylvania record.
  • Record: PATCH completed the check and produced a criminal-history result.
  • Request Under Review: manual review is needed and does not itself mean a record exists.
  • No Items Found: search/status information may have been entered incorrectly.

Pennsylvania says many no-record responses can be returned immediately, while requests needing manual review may take approximately two to four weeks.

How to request your own complete Pennsylvania criminal record

If you are reviewing your own record for accuracy, expungement, partial expungement, pardon or a court matter, an ordinary PATCH check may not show everything you need. Pennsylvania State Police offers an Individual Access and Review process.

Use Form SP 4-170

Access and Review requests are made by mail rather than through the ordinary online PATCH request.

Provide required identification

Follow the State Police form instructions and provide the required identity documentation.

Include the current $20 fee

Pennsylvania currently lists Individual Access and Review at $20.

Review conviction and non-conviction information

Pennsylvania describes Access and Review as a review of the individual’s entire criminal record, including convictions and non-convictions held in the repository.

This is not an employment clearance. Access and Review is designed for the subject of the record or an authorized representative reviewing the person’s own information.

Montgomery County arrest and police records

Arrest reports, investigative records and police incident information are not identical to court records. They can be held by the law-enforcement agency that created the record, including municipal police departments, the Sheriff’s Office or another criminal-justice agency.

For a specific police record, identify the agency involved first. Then use that agency’s Pennsylvania Right-to-Know or other records-request process where the requested material is legally accessible.

Arrest

Agency-created record

Arrest and incident information can originate with the police or sheriff agency involved.

Court filing

Judicial record

Once criminal charges are filed, the court docket becomes a separate judicial record.

Criminal history

State repository

Pennsylvania State Police maintains the statewide criminal-history repository used by PATCH.

Recent arrest but no court result? A police or custody record can exist before the full court case becomes easy to locate. Search the arresting agency and county custody resources in addition to the UJS docket system.

Requesting police body-camera or other law-enforcement recordings

Audio and video recordings created by Pennsylvania law-enforcement agencies are subject to a different process from an ordinary Right-to-Know request. Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office provides an Act 22 recording-request form for qualifying audio and video records.

The county’s form explains that Act 22 requests for law-enforcement recordings must be submitted through the procedures specified for those recordings, and ordinary Right-to-Know procedures do not replace that process.

Montgomery County jail and current custody records

The Montgomery County Correctional Facility is located in Lower Providence Township and houses both sentenced individuals and people awaiting trial.

Official correctional facility information
Remember the difference: a jail question asks whether someone is currently being held. A court docket explains what criminal proceeding is pending or how a case was resolved.

For Pennsylvania state-prison custody, use the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections inmate resources rather than assuming the Montgomery County facility holds every person convicted in the county.

Montgomery County active bench warrants

Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office operates the county Warrants Division and provides an official Active Bench Warrants resource.

Active Bench Warrants

Use the official county resource for available public warrant information.

Warrant status is time-sensitive. A warrant can be issued, recalled or otherwise changed. If the question affects you personally, verify current status directly with the Sheriff’s Office or court rather than relying on an old screenshot or third-party site.

Why a Montgomery County criminal record may not be publicly visible

Public UJS access does not mean every Pennsylvania criminal record is open to everyone. Access can be limited by statute, court order, expungement or Pennsylvania Clean Slate law.

  • expunged criminal cases
  • sealed records
  • limited-access Clean Slate cases
  • juvenile records subject to access restrictions
  • confidential filings
  • protected personal information
Known case missing? Check the spelling, court level and docket number first. If those are correct, contact the Clerk of Courts before concluding that the case never existed.

Montgomery County expungement and Clean Slate records

Montgomery County publishes separate instructions for expungement and limited-access proceedings. The county identifies three primary Pennsylvania criminal-rule pathways.

Pa.R.Crim.P. 490

Summary offenses

Used for qualifying summary matters that remained at the Magisterial District Court level.

Pa.R.Crim.P. 790

Criminal cases

Used for qualifying criminal cases involving misdemeanors, felonies or mixed charge types.

Pa.R.Crim.P. 791

Limited access

Allows qualifying records to be hidden from ordinary public view while remaining available to authorized entities.

Montgomery County explains that Pennsylvania’s Clean Slate laws can automatically limit public access to qualifying records. Clean Slate does not necessarily destroy the underlying record; authorized courts and law-enforcement agencies can retain access.

Official Expungement & Clean Slate guide
Important: filing eligibility can depend on the offense, disposition, time passed and other factors. The Clerk can provide forms and filing information but cannot give legal advice.

How to find older Montgomery County criminal records

If an older record does not appear in the current public UJS search, do not assume it has vanished. Montgomery County’s fee schedule specifically identifies both electronic and microfiche criminal-record searches.

Search PA UJS first

Check both Common Pleas and Magisterial District Court levels when appropriate.

Gather identifying details

Case number, defendant name, approximate filing year and OTN can help narrow a Clerk search.

Contact the Clerk of Courts

Ask whether the record is available electronically, on microfiche or through another archival process.

Order the needed copy type

Decide whether an ordinary copy or certified record is actually required for your purpose.

What to do if a Pennsylvania web docket contains an error

Pennsylvania UJS states that a party to a case, or that party’s attorney, who believes a web docket contains a data error should submit the appropriate correction request to the court in which the case was filed.

Before reporting an error: record the exact docket number, identify the incorrect field and keep any court order or filing that supports the correction. That is much more useful than reporting only a person’s name.

If the problem is in a Pennsylvania State Police criminal-history report rather than the court docket, use the State Police Access and Review process so the criminal-history repository itself can be reviewed.

Federal criminal cases involving Montgomery County

A federal criminal prosecution is not a Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas case. Federal cases are handled through the U.S. federal judiciary.

Use PACER to locate federal court cases. If you do not know which federal court handled the matter, the PACER Case Locator can help identify the court.

A person seeking their own FBI Identity History Summary should use the FBI’s official fingerprint-based process rather than treating PATCH as a nationwide criminal-history search.

Montgomery County criminal-record search tips

Tip 1

Start with court level

Many criminal cases begin at an MDJ court before continuing at Common Pleas.

Tip 2

Use the docket number

A known docket number usually produces cleaner results than a common name.

Tip 3

Read every disposition

Different charges in the same criminal case can end differently.

Tip 4

Do not confuse PATCH and UJS

One is a State Police criminal-history service; the other is a court docket system.

Tip 5

Check custody separately

Court status and current jail custody answer different questions.

Tip 6

Older record? Ask about microfiche

Montgomery County still lists microfiche copies and record searches in its current Clerk fee schedule.

Tip 7

Use OTN when available

Pennsylvania’s Offense Tracking Number can help separate similarly named criminal matters.

Tip 8

Recent filing may change

Recheck the docket when a case is active because bail, charges, hearings and dispositions can change.

Tip 9

Official copy means Clerk

A printed web docket is useful for research but is not automatically a certified court document.

Employment, housing and other background-check uses

Pennsylvania UJS specifically warns that public docket sheets should not be used in place of a Pennsylvania State Police criminal-history background check.

Public records are not automatically consumer reports. Employment, tenant screening, licensing and other eligibility decisions can involve separate federal and state legal requirements. Always use the correct legally permitted process for the intended purpose.
