Grayson County Criminal Records Search: Cases & Public Records

Grayson County, Texas official-records guide

Start with the right Grayson County office before searching a name

Grayson County criminal records are split between the District Clerk, County Clerk, Sheriff, county jail, Texas Department of Public Safety and, for appealed or federal cases, separate state and federal courts. Felony and misdemeanor court records can be searched through the county’s Judicial Records system, but copies, police reports, warrants and statewide criminal-history information follow different procedures.

County: Grayson County, Texas County seat: Sherman Information checked: September 24, 2026 Primary sources: official county, Texas and federal agencies
Important: an arrest, booking, pending charge and conviction are different events. Do not treat the existence of a criminal case as proof that the defendant was convicted. Always review the final disposition.

Which Grayson County office has the criminal record?

There is no single Grayson County database that answers every criminal-record question. The fastest route depends on whether you need a court case, current jail booking, Sheriff report, warrant information or statewide Texas criminal history.

What you need Official source What it covers Important limitation
Felony court case Grayson County District Clerk District-court felony case records Not a statewide criminal-history report
Misdemeanor court case Grayson County County Clerk County Court at Law #1 and #2 misdemeanor cases Felony files are handled by the District Clerk
Current inmate / booking Grayson County Jail Search County jail custody information Not a complete historical criminal record
Sheriff incident or offense record Grayson County Sheriff’s Office Records Division Qualifying records maintained by the Sheriff’s Office Texas Public Information Act exceptions can apply
Warrant for unpaid county court fines/costs Sheriff’s Collections Section Warrants tied to delinquent fines and court costs Other warrant information is not provided remotely by this section
Statewide public criminal history Texas DPS Crime Records Public Texas conviction and deferred-adjudication history Name searches can produce possible false matches

Grayson County’s main criminal courts are concentrated at the Justice Center in Sherman, which makes in-person research easier than in counties where offices are spread across several buildings.

If the online search is not enough

A jail record is not a conviction record. A person can be booked and later released without being convicted. Use the Judicial Records Search to follow the related court case and disposition.

Texas VINE: jail-status and court-event notifications

Grayson County participates in Texas VINE — Victim Information and Notification Everyday. The service can provide basic jail-status and court-event information and can notify registered users when certain custody or court changes occur.

VINE can provide notifications for events such as:

  • release from custody
  • transfer
  • court-event changes
  • changes in custody status

Grayson County publishes Texas VINE as a free service available 24 hours a day in English and Spanish.

Useful when monitoring a case: the live jail search tells you current information; VINE can help notify you when custody status changes. Do not rely on any single notification system for personal safety decisions.

How to request Grayson County Sheriff’s Office reports and public records

The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office Records Division maintains electronic and manual law-enforcement records and processes requests under the Texas Public Information Act.

The Sheriff requires public-record requests to be made in writing.

Describe the record precisely

Include information such as incident date, location, names, report number or other identifying details when known.

Submit by email, mail or in person

Email requests can be sent to gcsopublicinfo@co.grayson.tx.us.

For mail or walk-in requests, use the Records Division address

Grayson County Sheriff’s Office
200 S. Crockett St., Suite 105A
Sherman, TX 75090

Wait for the agency’s review

The Sheriff’s Office publishes a 10-business-day review/response process for public-information requests.

Review any cost estimate before a large request

The Sheriff’s Office states that time and copying costs may apply to voluminous requests and that the agency will disclose the expense before you incur the obligation.

Records contact

Sheriff Records Division

Phone: 903-813-4200 ext. 2296
Email: gcsopublicinfo@co.grayson.tx.us
Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.

Why a report can be partially withheld: not every law-enforcement record is automatically public in full. Texas law contains exceptions and confidentiality rules, and an agency may seek an Attorney General ruling when it believes requested information must or may be withheld.

Grayson County warrant information

Grayson County has a particularly important local limitation on warrant information.

The Sheriff’s Collections Section publishes warrant information for non-payment of fines and court costs in the County Courts at Law and District Courts.

Important local restriction: the Sheriff’s Office states that it does not provide warrant information other than delinquent-fine and court-cost warrants through this process. Other warrant information must be obtained in person.

The county also notes that some fine/cost warrants may be resolved without arrest, and information to the Collections Section may remain anonymous.

Search the case too. If you already know the defendant or case number, review the Judicial Records Search for the underlying court case before calling collections. Court-event history can provide useful context.

Texas DPS statewide criminal-history search

A Grayson County court search tells you what was filed locally. It is not the same thing as a statewide Texas criminal-history search.

The Texas Department of Public Safety Crime Records Division provides a public Criminal History Conviction Name Search. Under Texas law, qualifying conviction and deferred-adjudication information may be available to the public.

Create a public DPS Crime Records account

General public users should use the public Crime Records site rather than the restricted secure site reserved for authorized entities.

Purchase search credits

DPS currently charges $1 per search credit. Credit-card purchases carry the currently published processing charges.

Enter accurate identifiers

First and last name are required. DPS recommends adding full date of birth, middle name and maiden name where available.

Review possible matches cautiously

DPS expands searches to similar names. A result can be a possible match rather than a confirmed identity.

Use fingerprints for positive identification

DPS warns that name-based searches can both miss records and return records belonging to a different person. Fingerprint identification is the reliable method for linking an individual to a record.

Open Texas DPS Criminal History Search
Use both systems when appropriate: DPS can show statewide public criminal-history information; the Grayson County judicial system provides the detailed local court case history and docket.

Grayson County criminal record copy and search fees

The County Clerk and District Clerk use different fee schedules. The District Clerk published an updated schedule effective January 1, 2026.

Office / service Current published fee Use
District Clerk record search $5 per search Locating a cause number, file or record
District Clerk certified paper copy $5 certificate + $1/page Certified district-court document
District Clerk non-certified paper copy $1/page Plain paper copy
District Clerk paper converted to electronic format $1/page Scanning paper record into electronic format
District Clerk electronic document up to 10 pages $1 Electronic copy under current fee schedule
District Clerk electronic document over 10 pages $0.10/page Electronic copy over 10 pages
County Clerk misdemeanor copy $1/page County Court at Law criminal document
County Clerk certification $5 Certification in addition to copy charge
Texas DPS public online search $1/search credit Statewide public name-based criminal-history search

Government fee schedules can change. Recheck the clerk or DPS page before mailing payment or making a special trip.

Need a certified copy? A screenshot or printout from an online docket is not the same thing as a clerk-certified court document. Request certification directly from the clerk who maintains the case.

Texas Public Information Act requests vs Grayson County court records

This distinction prevents many unnecessary requests.

Sheriff / government records

Texas Public Information Act

Qualifying Sheriff records can be requested through the Sheriff’s Records Division under Chapter 552 of the Texas Government Code.

Judicial records

Court records use a different access framework

Texas excludes the judiciary from the Public Information Act. Court records are accessed under judicial rules and other applicable law rather than an ordinary TPIA request.

Practical example: request a Sheriff’s incident report from the Sheriff’s Records Division, but request a felony indictment, judgment or certified court file from the District Clerk.

What about Grayson County probation records?

Grayson County Community Supervision and Corrections Department handles community-supervision functions for county and district criminal courts.

The county specifically states that Community Supervision and Corrections Department records are considered judicial records and therefore do not fall under ordinary Open Records or Freedom of Information Act procedures.

Do not assume probation files are ordinary public agency files. A public court docket may show community-supervision terms or case events, while the probation department’s internal file is treated differently.

Juvenile records are not the same as adult criminal records

Grayson County Juvenile Services operates under the county Juvenile Board, which includes judges from the 15th, 59th and 397th District Courts and the County Judge.

Juvenile records are subject to special confidentiality and access rules. A failed adult Judicial Records Search should not be interpreted as evidence that no juvenile proceeding ever existed.

Do not try to bypass juvenile-record restrictions. If you are a person legally entitled to a juvenile record, contact the relevant court, juvenile-services office or attorney for the proper access procedure.

Texas expunction and nondisclosure for Grayson County records

A record that was once visible can later become unavailable because of an expunction, nondisclosure order, sealing requirement or another lawful restriction.

Expunction

Chapter 55A

Texas Code of Criminal Procedure Chapter 55A governs expunction of qualifying criminal records. Eligibility depends on the arrest, charge history, disposition and statutory conditions.

Nondisclosure

Restricted public disclosure

Texas orders of nondisclosure operate differently from expunction. Qualifying criminal-history information may be restricted from public disclosure without being treated exactly the same as an expunged record.

Under current Texas law, qualifying expunction petitions are generally filed in a court authorized by Chapter 55A, including a district court in the county where the person was arrested or where the alleged offense occurred, subject to the statutory provisions governing the particular case.

Grayson County’s 2026 District Clerk fee schedule lists ordinary non-acquittal expunction matters among civil filings, while Texas law provides different treatment for certain qualifying acquittal-related filings.

Do not use a generic checklist to decide eligibility. Texas expunction and nondisclosure laws include exclusions, waiting periods and case-specific rules. Clerk staff can explain filing procedure but cannot give legal advice.
Texas Chapter 55A

What if a Grayson County or Texas record belongs to someone else?

A shared or similar name can produce the wrong court or Texas DPS match. This matters especially when researching common surnames.

Before relying on a result, compare:

  • full legal name
  • date of birth
  • middle or maiden name
  • case or cause number
  • filing date
  • offense date
  • court assignment
  • arresting agency

Texas DPS states that name-based searching is not a positive-identification method. A fingerprint-based personal review is the stronger path when a person needs to determine whether a Texas criminal-history record actually belongs to them.

Mistaken identity can also matter in expunction law. Texas Chapter 55A contains procedures addressing qualifying mistaken-identity situations, including fingerprint-based information in certain applications.

Grayson County criminal-record search tips that save time

Tip 01

Search the county portal first

Use Grayson County’s Judicial Records Search before paying a commercial records website.

Tip 02

Know felony vs misdemeanor

Felony = District Clerk. County Court at Law misdemeanor = County Clerk.

Tip 03

Use the cause number

It is faster and reduces the chance of confusing people with similar names.

Tip 04

Current jail does not equal case outcome

Follow a booking with the court docket to determine what happened later.

Tip 05

Use VINE for custody changes

VINE can provide notifications when custody status or certain court events change.

Tip 06

Other warrant info may require a visit

Grayson County publishes a specific in-person requirement for warrant information outside delinquent fines/costs.

Tip 07

Sheriff report ≠ court record

Request the incident report from the Sheriff’s Office and the filed criminal case from the clerk.

Tip 08

Use DPS for statewide context

A Grayson County search does not automatically show cases reported elsewhere in Texas.

Tip 09

Read the newest docket events

Charges can be amended, dismissed or resolved differently from the original filing.

Using Grayson County criminal records for employment, housing or screening

Public court or criminal-history information is not automatically a legally compliant consumer report. Employment, tenant, credit, insurance and other eligibility decisions can involve the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act and other laws depending on who obtains the information and how it is used.

Use-purpose matters. Criminal-Record.org is an informational public-record guide and is not a consumer reporting agency. Do not assume that a public-record search may be used for every screening purpose.
