Galveston, Texas Criminal Records Search: Cases & Public Records

Galveston city + county official-record guide

Start with the court level that actually handled the case

Criminal records in Galveston are split among several government offices. Felony cases generally route through the Galveston County District Clerk, misdemeanor County Court at Law cases through the County Clerk, city-level citation and ordinance matters through the Galveston Municipal Court, and arrest, jail, wanted-person and many law-enforcement records through the Sheriff’s Office or the police agency that created the report.

Coverage: Galveston & Galveston County, Texas Information checked: September 2026 Primary sources: County, city, Texas & federal government
Best first step: Use the current Galveston County Tyler Odyssey Portal when you are looking for a county criminal case. The county’s former Public Access application reached end-of-support after December 31, 2025, so older bookmarks may send you to an obsolete system. For a recent arrest or current county inmate, use the Sheriff’s P2C portal instead.

Which Galveston office holds the record?

A person can have several different “criminal records” tied to the same incident. The arresting agency creates one record, the jail creates another, prosecutors and courts create case records, and Texas DPS may later receive qualifying criminal-history information.

District Clerk

Felony / district-court criminal case

The District Clerk is custodian of criminal pleadings and papers filed in the district courts it serves.

County Clerk

Misdemeanor / County Court at Law

Galveston County’s County Courts at Law are supported by the County Clerk, including misdemeanor court records.

Municipal Court

City-level citation or ordinance case

Galveston’s Municipal Court maintains municipal dockets, dispositions, defendant correspondence and city-court warrants.

Sheriff

Jail / booking / arrest / wanted

Use Galveston County Sheriff’s P2C for current inmate information, arrests, events, wanted persons and other public tools.

Texas DPS

Statewide criminal history

Texas DPS provides qualifying statewide public conviction and deferred-adjudication information.

Federal Court

Federal prosecution

Federal Galveston cases are separate and use the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas and PACER.

An arrest is not a conviction. Booking information, police allegations and a filed criminal charge do not establish guilt. Check the court’s final disposition before describing the result of a case.

Use the current Galveston County Odyssey Portal

Galveston County transitioned away from the older Tyler Public Access system. The former system states that support ended after December 31, 2025 and directs users to the current Tyler Odyssey Portal for essential case and party information.

Open Galveston County Odyssey Portal
Do not rely on an old Public Access bookmark. If an older guide sends you to the legacy Galveston County Public Access application, move to the Odyssey URL above before assuming the search system is unavailable.

What to select after opening Odyssey

1 Open Smart Search Use Smart Search when you need the case itself.
2 Enter name or case number A known case number is more precise than a common person’s name.
3 Narrow only if needed Use advanced filters when the initial search returns too many matches.
4 Open the case Verify court, case type, party, filing date and event history.

How to search Galveston criminal records by name

If you do not know the case number, use the Odyssey Smart Search and enter the person’s full legal name as accurately as possible.

Start with the full legal name

Avoid nicknames when the person’s full legal name is known. Middle names or initials can be especially helpful with common surnames.

Do not add every filter immediately

First confirm that the person’s name produces results. One incorrect date or case-type filter can hide the correct record.

Use advanced filtering for common names

Narrow by location, case type, case status, filing date or judicial officer only when you know enough facts to use those fields safely.

Open the case summary

Compare the court, case number, filing date, party information and event history before deciding that the record belongs to the person you are researching.

Save the case number

Once you identify the right case, record the full case number. That makes future copy, hearing and clerk requests much easier.

Local shortcut: Galveston County’s published Odyssey guidance directs users to Smart Search. If you already have a case number from a DPS record, jail document, bond document or attorney, use that before performing broad name searches.

Felony cases: use the Galveston County District Clerk

The Galveston County District Clerk is the custodian of pleadings and papers filed in the district courts it serves, including criminal cases.

The District Clerk’s Criminal Section specifically provides access to the county’s criminal court record search.

Need a filed document? Use the District Clerk’s copy-request process after you have identified the case. The clerk’s online copy form is designed for copies of documents already filed in the office; it is not intended to generate a list of cases from a general name search.

Misdemeanor cases: use the Galveston County Clerk

Galveston County’s County Clerk supports the county’s Courts at Law. The county currently lists County Court at Law #1, #2 and #3 among the courts under the County Clerk.

The county’s current FAQ states that plain case-document copies may be purchased from the County Clerk for $1 per page. Certified copies are listed at $5 for certification plus $1 per page. Confirm the current fee before placing an order because clerk fee schedules can change.

Galveston Municipal Court handles a different layer of cases

If the matter involves a City of Galveston citation, municipal docket, city ordinance or other case handled by the city’s Municipal Court of Record, do not begin with the county felony records office.

The Municipal Court maintains and prepares municipal dockets, records case dispositions, receives defendant correspondence, and issues qualifying summonses and warrants.

Galveston Municipal Court
Do not mix city and county court searches. A municipal citation may not be the criminal case you are expecting to find in a county district-court search. Identify the issuing court or agency from the citation or paperwork first.

How to read the case before drawing a conclusion

Finding a matching name is only the start. Review the case events and final disposition, especially when the record contains multiple counts.

Item What it can tell you What to verify
Case number Unique court-file identifier. Save it for later searches and copy requests.
Case type Helps identify felony, misdemeanor or another case category. Make sure you are in the correct court system.
Charge / count The alleged offense filed in court. A charge is not itself a conviction.
Event history Hearings, filings, orders and other docket activity. Look for later entries that change earlier information.
Disposition How a charge or case was resolved. Dismissal, conviction, acquittal, deferred result or other resolution.
Court setting Upcoming or completed hearing information. Confirm whether the date is future or historical.
If you need legal proof: order the filed or certified court document rather than relying only on a screen result.

How to get plain or certified Galveston court records

Once you know the correct case number and clerk, request the document from the office that actually maintains that case.

District Clerk

District-court documents

Use the District Clerk’s copy-request form for documents already filed with that office.

District Clerk Copy Request
County Clerk

County Court at Law documents

Use the County Clerk for misdemeanor case copies and certified documents maintained by that office.

County Clerk Court Records

Have these details ready

  • full case number
  • defendant’s full name
  • court or case type
  • specific document requested
  • approximate filing date
  • whether certification is required
Why the case number matters: the District Clerk’s copy form explicitly says it is for copies of previously filed documents, not for producing a list of cases. Search first, request copies second.

Search Galveston County jail and inmate records

The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office operates an online Inmate Inquiry through its Police-to-Citizen (P2C) system.

Search Galveston County Inmates

The inmate search supports searches by last name and first name. Use it when you are trying to determine whether someone is currently held in the county jail.

Galveston County Jail

Galveston, TX 77551

County jail is not state prison. A person in the Galveston County Jail may not appear in TDCJ’s state offender search. Use TDCJ separately for state-prison or state-supervision information.

The Sheriff’s P2C portal offers more than inmate search

Galveston County’s P2C system includes several useful public tools:

  • inmate inquiry
  • arrest information
  • event search
  • daily bulletin
  • wanted list
  • public police reports
  • sex-offender search
  • report / case-number search
Open Galveston County P2C

Searching a Sheriff’s report number

P2C provides a quick case/report-number field. The Sheriff’s portal gives the example 17-001234 and instructs users to enter it as 17001234 without the dash.

Very useful local tip: if someone gave you a Galveston Sheriff’s report number containing a dash, try entering the digits without the dash in the P2C quick search.
Crash-report change: the current P2C homepage says GCSO accident reports are no longer available from P2C and directs users to the Texas Department of Transportation CRIS system instead.

How to request Galveston County Sheriff’s records

If the record you need is not available directly through P2C, the Sheriff’s Office accepts written records and public-information requests through its Records Division.

Galveston County Sheriff’s Office
601 54th Street
Galveston, TX 77551

The Sheriff’s published guidance says requests can be submitted by email, mail or hand delivery. Describe the record with enough detail for staff to identify it, such as report number, date, location, person’s name and incident type when known.

Not every law-enforcement document is fully public. Active investigations, protected personal information and other material may be withheld or redacted under applicable Texas law.

City of Galveston Police records use the City’s Public Records Center

If the Galveston Police Department created the report, do not automatically send the request to the County Sheriff’s Office.

The City of Galveston states that public-information requests for all city departments, including the Police Department, should be submitted through the City Secretary’s Public Records Center.

Wanted-person and warrant information

The Galveston County Sheriff’s P2C portal includes a public Wanted List.

Galveston County Wanted List

For a municipal case, the Galveston Municipal Court also explains that a warrant can be issued when a defendant fails to respond to a citation or satisfy court obligations.

If you are checking a warrant for yourself: verify it with the responsible court or law-enforcement agency rather than relying only on a third-party warrant website. Public web lists can have timing or status limitations.

Texas DPS provides a separate statewide criminal-history search

Local Galveston court records are not the same as the Texas Department of Public Safety Computerized Criminal History system.

DPS provides a public Criminal History Conviction Name Search for qualifying Texas conviction and deferred-adjudication information.

Texas DPS Public Criminal History Search

Current DPS online search model

DPS currently charges $1 per search credit, with additional transaction charges when credits are purchased by credit card.

DPS name search is not fingerprint identification. Texas DPS warns that name-based searches can return a record belonging to another person or miss a record belonging to the person searched. Fingerprints are the reliable method for positive identity matching.
Galveston Police also points people to Texas DPS when they want a copy of their criminal history rather than a local police incident report.

Search Texas prison and supervision records with TDCJ

For a person who may be in the Texas state prison system or otherwise within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice’s public offender-search coverage, use the TDCJ search.

TDCJ Offender Search

The current search supports name, SID number or TDCJ number and allows wildcard searching with an asterisk when only part of a name or number is known.

Do not confuse TDCJ with the Galveston County Jail. Local pretrial custody and county-jail detention are searched through the Sheriff’s P2C system.

Sex-offender records can be searched locally or statewide

Galveston County Sheriff’s P2C includes its own public sex-offender search with fields for name, race, sex, age and location.

Galveston County Sex Offender Search Texas DPS Statewide Registry
This is a specialized registry. A person not appearing in a sex-offender search should not be interpreted as having no criminal record.

If the criminal case was appealed, search Texas appellate records

Texas operates a statewide appellate case-information search separate from county trial-court records.

Texas Appellate Case Search

If you already know the Galveston trial-court case number, keep it available when researching a possible appeal. Appellate records may show opinions, orders, briefs and appellate case activity that do not appear as documents in the county trial-court portal.

Federal criminal cases in Galveston use the Southern District of Texas

Federal prosecutions are not Galveston County criminal cases and will not be found simply by searching the County Clerk or District Clerk portal.

The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas maintains a Galveston Division.

Expunction and nondisclosure can change public visibility

Texas has different forms of criminal-record relief, and they should not be treated as interchangeable.

Expunction

Qualifying record removal

Texas law allows certain qualifying arrest and criminal records to be expunged through a court process.

Nondisclosure

Restricted public disclosure

An order of nondisclosure can limit public release of qualifying criminal-history information while specified government agencies may retain lawful access.

Galveston County’s County Clerk court-information page links directly to Texas Office of Court Administration nondisclosure forms and resources. The District Clerk also publishes expunction-related forms for qualifying filings.

Missing online record? Do not automatically conclude that it never existed. Access can change because of expunction, nondisclosure, sealing, data-retention rules or system limitations.

Why a Galveston criminal-record search may return nothing

Wrong court level

You searched District Clerk records for a misdemeanor or municipal matter.

Different name

The person may be indexed under a middle name, former name, maiden name or another spelling.

Very recent event

A recent arrest may appear in jail or police records before the criminal case is fully created.

Different county

Living in Galveston County does not mean every criminal case was filed there.

Record relief

Expunction or nondisclosure may affect public availability.

Federal case

A federal prosecution requires a PACER search rather than a Galveston County court search.

Galveston criminal-record search tips that save time

Tip 01

Use Odyssey, not the retired portal

Galveston County’s older Public Access application reached end-of-support after December 31, 2025.

Tip 02

Case number first

If you already have the court case number, use it instead of a common name search.

Tip 03

Felony vs misdemeanor matters

District Clerk and County Clerk are different custodians. Use the clerk that serves the court handling the case.

Tip 04

Recent arrest? Check P2C

Jail, booking and arrest information can appear before the court case reaches its final form.

Tip 05

Remove the dash from GCSO report numbers

P2C instructs users to enter report numbers such as 17-001234 as 17001234.

Tip 06

Police report? Identify the agency

GPD records go through the City Public Records Center; Sheriff’s records go through GCSO.

Tip 07

Save the final disposition

Do not stop at the original charge. Verify how each count was actually resolved.

Tip 08

Use DPS for statewide history

The county court search is local. Texas DPS serves a different statewide criminal-history purpose.

Tip 09

Federal means PACER

Galveston’s federal courthouse is part of the Southern District of Texas, not Galveston County courts.

Official sources for verifying Galveston records

Editorial note: Criminal-Record.org is an independent informational resource and is not affiliated with Galveston County, the City of Galveston, Texas DPS, TDCJ or the federal judiciary. Online records can change because of later dispositions, data corrections, expunction, nondisclosure, court orders or system updates. Verify important information with the government office that maintains the original record. An arrest, booking entry or filed criminal charge should not be represented as proof of guilt.
