Galveston County Criminal Court Records Search: Cases & Dockets

Galveston County official court-records guide

Find the right criminal case, docket or court record first

Galveston County criminal cases are not kept by one office. Felony District Court files are maintained through the District Clerk, misdemeanor County Court at Law records through the County Clerk, lower-level Justice Court matters through the appropriate Justice of the Peace, city cases through municipal courts, and arrest or jail information through the Sheriff’s Office and other law-enforcement agencies. The county’s current Tyler Odyssey Portal is the best online starting point for many District and County Court case searches.

Coverage: Galveston County, Texas Verified: September 28, 2026 Sources: county courts, clerks, sheriff and Texas agencies
2026 portal update: Galveston County’s older Public Access application reached end-of-support on December 31, 2025. The county now directs users to the Tyler Odyssey Portal for essential case and party information. Do not build your search around an old bookmarked Public Access URL.

Which Galveston County court has the criminal record?

Before typing a person’s name into a portal, identify the court level. That single step prevents many false “no record found” results.

Record type Likely court / custodian Best starting point
Felony criminal case District Court / District Clerk Tyler Odyssey Portal, then District Clerk for copies
County-level misdemeanor County Court at Law / County Clerk Odyssey court search, then County Clerk
Justice Court criminal matter Justice of the Peace Court Correct JP precinct
City ordinance / qualifying Class C case Municipal Court Municipal court for the city where the case was filed
Current jail custody Galveston County Sheriff’s Office P2C Inmate Inquiry
Recent Sheriff’s arrest / police report Sheriff / reporting agency P2C or the arresting police department
Statewide public Texas criminal history Texas DPS DPS Crime Records Division
Useful local distinction: the Galveston County Criminal District Attorney represents the State in criminal cases filed in Justice Courts, County Courts at Law and District Courts, with municipal-court misdemeanors being an important exception. The prosecutor is not the clerk that maintains the official court file.

How to find a Galveston County criminal court date or docket

Searching for a case and searching for a hearing are slightly different tasks. If your main question is “When is the next court date?”, use the Odyssey hearing-search function instead of assuming the last docket event is the next setting.

1 Open Odyssey Use the supported county portal.
2 Select Search Hearings Use the hearing search when you need a date, time or setting.
3 Match the case Confirm the person’s name, cause number and court.
4 Verify close to the hearing Court settings can change, so recheck or call the court if attendance is important.
If a defendant recently bonded out: Galveston County explains that a court setting may not appear immediately. The bond must reach the court and the case must be created/scheduled before an upcoming setting appears online. Out-of-county warrant bonds can take additional time to reach the court.

How to read a Galveston County criminal case result

A useful criminal-record search should answer how the case ended—not merely what someone was accused of at the beginning.

Item What it means What to verify
Cause / case number Identifier used by the clerk and court for the case. Use this for copies, calls and follow-up searches.
Charge Allegation filed in the criminal case. A charge alone does not establish conviction.
Events Chronological docket activity. Look for indictment, plea, hearing, judgment and dismissal entries.
Court setting Scheduled appearance or hearing. Confirm the latest date and time.
Disposition How a charge or case concluded. Dismissal, conviction, acquittal, plea or another result.
Sentence Penalty or conditions ordered after a qualifying disposition. Confinement, probation, fine, restitution or other terms.
Lead attorney Attorney information associated with a party. Galveston County’s FAQ directs users to party information for attorney details.
Do not stop at the arrest or original charge. Charges can be amended, rejected, dismissed, reduced or resolved differently. Read the disposition and judgment before describing someone as convicted.

Justice of the Peace criminal records

Galveston County criminal matters can also begin or remain in a Justice of the Peace court. The Criminal District Attorney confirms that criminal cases may be filed in the county’s Justice of the Peace courts as well as County Courts at Law and District Courts.

JP records are precinct-specific. If your citation, complaint, bond document or notice names a JP court, use that court directly rather than assuming the case is in the main District/County Odyssey workflow.

Galveston County Justice Courts

Municipal criminal and Class C records are separate

City municipal courts maintain their own dockets for cases within their jurisdiction. Galveston County’s Criminal District Attorney specifically notes that misdemeanors filed in municipal courts are an exception to the criminal cases prosecuted by that county office.

If the case was filed by the City of Galveston Municipal Court, use the city’s Municipal Court of Record rather than assuming that a county clerk search will show everything.

City matters are highly localized. A case from League City, Texas City, Dickinson, Friendswood, Santa Fe or another municipality may belong to that city’s own municipal court rather than the City of Galveston court.

How to get plain, certified or electronic criminal court copies

The online docket is useful for research, but an official certified copy must come through the clerk that maintains the underlying case.

District Clerk copy fees

Copy type 2026 listed fee Use
Certification certificate and seal $5 Added when a certified paper or electronic copy is requested.
Paper copy / paper converted to electronic $1 per page Standard reproduction from paper.
Electronic copy $1 minimum up to 10 pages; then $0.10/page Applies to eligible electronic copies under the District Clerk fee schedule.
Exemplification certificate Additional $5 Used when exemplification is required.
Service copies $0.25 per page Subject to the clerk’s listed exceptions.
District Clerk copy request

The District Clerk’s online copy form is for copies of previously filed documents. It is not designed to produce a research report or list of every case associated with a person.

County Clerk criminal case copies

Galveston County’s published FAQ currently states that plain County Clerk case-document copies are $1 per page. Certified copies add a $5 certification charge plus $1 per page.

Some public case documents can also be opened and printed through the online court-record system when the document is remotely available.

Certified copy vs. online print: a document printed from a public portal can be useful for research, but it does not become a clerk-certified copy simply because it came from an official website.

What to do when an older criminal record is missing online

A missing portal result can have several explanations. The file may be older, sealed, indexed differently, associated with another court, or not remotely accessible.

Step 1

Search a different identifier

Try the cause number, full legal name, former name or a narrower filing-date range.

Step 2

Confirm the court level

Felony, misdemeanor, JP and municipal records are not necessarily stored in the same place.

Step 3

Ask the clerk

Give the clerk the person’s name, approximate filing year and any known case or charge information.

Practical local tip: if you found an old arrest through Sheriff records but no court case online, use the arrest date and charge to help the District or County Clerk identify the correct court file.

Search current Galveston County jail and inmate records

The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office operates a Police-to-Citizen system with a dedicated Inmate Inquiry. This is the correct first stop when the question is current custody rather than final court disposition.

Search Galveston County inmates

The inmate search currently supports first- and last-name searches. Individual inmate detail pages can include information such as:

  • name
  • age
  • race and sex
  • arrest date
  • release date when applicable
  • next court date when available
  • booking image where displayed
  • total bond amount
Jail data is not a conviction record. Custody information tells you that someone was booked or held; it does not tell you that the person was found guilty. Follow the case into the court system for the disposition.

Search Sheriff’s arrests, events and public police reports

The Sheriff’s P2C system does considerably more than inmate lookup. It includes event search, daily bulletins, arrests, wanted persons and public reports.

Open Galveston County P2C
Arrests

Recent arrest information

Use P2C arrest and event functions when researching a Sheriff’s Office event.

Reports

Public police-report copies

The Sheriff’s FAQ says qualifying public reports can be obtained through P2C without the in-person report charge.

Daily activity

Daily Bulletin

Use the bulletin for recent Sheriff’s Office events rather than treating it as a court docket.

Searching by Sheriff’s report or case number

Galveston County P2C explains that report/case numbers are formatted with the year followed by the incident number. Its example shows a number such as 17-001234; when using the quick search, enter it without the dash as 17001234.

Crash-report exception: the Sheriff’s P2C site states that GCSO accident reports are no longer supplied there and directs users to the Texas Department of Transportation CRIS system for those reports.

Galveston County wanted and warrant information

The Sheriff’s P2C system includes a public Wanted section. Use it as a local law-enforcement resource, but understand that a wanted list and a complete court warrant history are not the same thing.

Galveston County wanted list
If a possible active warrant concerns you personally: verify it directly with the court or law-enforcement agency responsible for the warrant. Do not rely only on an unofficial people-search website before taking legal or travel decisions.

Use Texas DPS when you need statewide criminal history

Galveston County court records answer questions about cases filed in Galveston County. Texas DPS answers a different question: what public criminal-history information is maintained in the statewide Texas Computerized Criminal History system and is releasable to the public.

Texas DPS public criminal-history search

The current DPS public search uses name-based matching and search credits. DPS warns that name-based results can match the wrong person; fingerprint review is the more reliable route when identity is disputed.

Use Sheriff’s systems for local custody, recent arrest and qualifying police-report data.

Expunction, nondisclosure and sealed criminal records

A case that once appeared publicly may later become unavailable because of an expunction, order of nondisclosure, sealing rule or another legal restriction.

Galveston County’s County Clerk links users to Texas Office of Court Administration nondisclosure forms and petitions, while the District Clerk publishes an expunction-related form among its court forms.

District Clerk forms County Clerk court resources
Expunction and nondisclosure are not interchangeable. Eligibility depends on the actual arrest, charge, disposition, waiting periods and Texas law. A missing public search result does not by itself prove that a record was legally expunged.

Criminal appeals from Galveston County

A trial-court record and an appellate record are separate files. If a Galveston County criminal case was appealed, use the Texas appellate court case-search system in addition to the county trial-court docket.

Texas appellate case search includes the Courts of Appeals and the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. Appellate search data is not a replacement for the trial court’s District or County Clerk record.

Texas appellate case search

Federal criminal cases are outside Galveston County’s court portal

Federal prosecutions involving Galveston County do not become Galveston County District Court cases simply because the event happened locally. Federal criminal cases use the U.S. District Court system and PACER.

Galveston County is within the federal Southern District of Texas.

Search federal cases with PACER
Simple rule: county/state prosecution → Galveston County/Texas courts;
federal prosecution → U.S. District Court/PACER.

Galveston County Justice Center location

The Justice Center is the main physical location for many Galveston County District and County Court record tasks. The District Clerk, County Clerk court operations and several criminal courts operate from this complex.

600 59th Street
Galveston, TX 77551

District Clerk: Room 4001
County Clerk: Suite 2001

Court Administration

District Court Administration: 409-770-5230

Before driving there: identify whether you need the District Clerk, County Clerk or a particular courtroom. Several offices share the Justice Center, but they do not maintain the same records.

Galveston County search tips that save time

Tip 01

Use the current Odyssey portal

Avoid the retired Public Access application that reached end-of-support after 2025.

Tip 02

Case search and hearing search are different

Use Smart Search for the case; use Search Hearings when the main goal is a court date.

Tip 03

Start with the cause number

It is more precise than a name and reduces same-name confusion.

Tip 04

Check the court level

A felony District Court record and County Court misdemeanor record have different custodians.

Tip 05

Recent arrest? Check P2C first

Capture the exact name spelling, arrest date and charge before trying to match a newly filed court case.

Tip 06

No court date may simply mean “not scheduled yet”

Bond paperwork and case creation can occur before an online court setting appears.

Tip 07

Open linked documents

When Odyssey displays a document link in Events & Orders, read the actual filing instead of only the summary.

Tip 08

Municipal cases stay local

A city case may not belong to either the County Clerk or District Clerk.

Tip 09

Verify the final disposition

Arrests and charges do not prove conviction. Read the judgment or final court event.

Using criminal court records for background decisions

A public Galveston County case search is not automatically a legally compliant consumer background report. Employment, housing, credit, insurance and other eligibility decisions can trigger federal or state requirements depending on who obtains the information and how it is used.

Do not treat a docket hit as a background-check conclusion. Verify the person’s identity, the court, the final disposition and whether the record has been restricted before relying on it for any consequential decision.
