Marion County Criminal Records Search: Cases & Public Records

Marion County, Indiana official-records guide

Start with Indiana MyCase, then use the Clerk for the official record

Marion County criminal records are split across several systems. Indiana MyCase provides online access to many non-confidential court cases, while the Marion County Clerk maintains the actual Circuit and Superior Court records. Jail and custody information is handled separately by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, and statewide name-based criminal-history checks are available from Indiana State Police.

Jurisdiction: Marion County, Indiana County seat: Indianapolis Information checked: October 2026
Fast answer: If you want to see charges, hearings, bond entries, attorneys and dispositions, begin with Indiana MyCase. If you need a certified criminal record or a document that is not downloadable online, contact the Marion County Clerk Criminal Division at the Community Justice Campus.

Marion County criminal records come from different agencies

A court case, jail booking and statewide criminal-history report are not the same record. Using the right source first prevents a lot of unnecessary searching.

Court

Criminal case record

Charges filed in court, hearings, bond activity, attorneys, pleas, dispositions and sentencing events.

Clerk

Official court copy

Filed documents, certified records and case material that may not be available as downloadable MyCase documents.

Sheriff

Custody / jail record

Current detention information and Sheriff’s Office records are separate from the final court disposition.

Indiana State Police

Limited Criminal History

Name-based statewide Indiana criminal-history information, with statutory and reporting limitations.

Indiana DOC

State prison record

Correctional information for people under Indiana Department of Correction jurisdiction.

Federal court

Federal criminal case

Federal prosecutions in Indianapolis use federal court systems and PACER rather than Indiana MyCase.

An arrest or criminal charge is not proof of guilt. Always check the final court disposition. A case may end in dismissal, acquittal, conviction, diversion, plea agreement or another disposition.

How to search Marion County criminal cases with Indiana MyCase

Indiana’s official MyCase system searches non-confidential cases in Indiana courts using the Odyssey case-management system.

MyCase allows public searching by:

  • case number
  • party name
  • attorney
  • court
  • case status
  • filing-date range
Open Indiana MyCase

Choose Name or Case search

If you already know the cause number, use it. Otherwise select the Name tab and enter the defendant’s name.

Narrow the court to Marion County

Limiting the results to Marion County avoids unrelated Indiana cases involving people with the same name.

Use Sounds-Like only when necessary

MyCase supports sounds-like name searching. It can help with uncertain spelling, but it may also return more unrelated matches.

Open the Chronological Case Summary

Review the charges, hearings, bond events, attorney appearances, motions, court orders and disposition activity.

Check available documents

Some public filings and orders may be linked electronically. Availability varies by document and access rules.

Use the Clerk for anything missing

MyCase is an access tool. The Marion County Clerk remains the official local record keeper for court records.

Public access has limits. Confidential, sealed and expunged matters do not necessarily appear in ordinary MyCase searches. Some juvenile and other protected information is also restricted.

How a Marion County criminal cause number helps you search faster

Indiana case numbers identify the county, court, filing year, case type and sequence. Marion County uses county code 49.

A criminal case can look similar to: 49D17-2606-F6-016596.

49

Marion County

The county identifier helps distinguish Marion cases from cases filed elsewhere in Indiana.

Court code

Court division

The following court characters identify the Marion Circuit or Superior Court division.

Case type

Criminal category

Codes such as CM, F6 or other criminal classifications help show the type of proceeding.

Sequence

Unique case

The final numbers distinguish that filing from other cases in the court.

Save the cause number once you find it. It is the most useful reference when requesting documents, calling the Clerk or following later court activity.

How to read a Marion County criminal case without misinterpreting it

Case information What it tells you What to verify
Charge An allegation filed by the prosecutor. Check the later disposition before calling it a conviction.
Bond Release and financial conditions set in the case. Bond can change during the life of the case.
Hearing A scheduled or completed court event. A hearing entry does not itself show guilt.
Plea The defendant’s response or negotiated plea. Read the corresponding disposition and sentence.
Disposition How the charge was resolved. Multiple charges may end differently.
Sentence Penalty or conditions imposed after conviction or qualifying resolution. Review jail/prison, probation, fines and other terms separately.

How to request an official Marion County criminal court record

The Marion County Clerk’s Office is the local court record keeper and provides record-copy services.

Before requesting a copy, gather:

  • full defendant name
  • cause number
  • approximate filing year
  • court division if known
  • specific document needed
  • whether certification is required
Do not ask for a certified copy unless you actually need one. A plain copy can be enough for personal research. Formal legal, licensing or government purposes may require a certified record.

Jail records are not the same as the criminal court record

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office manages county custody and the jail system. A newly arrested person may appear in custody information before the full criminal case is easy to locate in MyCase.

1 Check custody Use the official Marion County jail/Sheriff route when the person was recently arrested.
2 Save identifying details Note booking, custody or case information shown by the jail system.
3 Switch to MyCase Use the court record for charges, hearings, bond and disposition.
4 Follow the final outcome A booking allegation may not match the final court disposition.
Do not equate booking with conviction. Jail data answers who is in custody and why they were booked. The court record answers what charges were formally filed and how those charges were resolved.

Indiana State Police Limited Criminal History search

For a broader Indiana name-based criminal-history search, use the Indiana State Police Limited Criminal History service.

ISP says the Limited Criminal History report contains Indiana felony and misdemeanor arrest information covered by the service. It is a name-and-date-of-birth based check and does not include criminal-history information from other states.

This is not a nationwide background check. ISP specifically describes the Limited Criminal History product as an Indiana-only name-based search. Completeness also depends on county participation and reporting.

Current ISP result categories

  • ON FILE — Criminal Record Found
  • INCONCLUSIVE RESULTS
  • NO RECORDS FOUND

Current fee guidance

The current IN.gov service price list shows a Limited Criminal History search at $15 per record for subscribers and $15.70 per record for non-subscribers paying by card. ISP also publishes a lower state-only statutory fee in some offline/subscriber contexts, so confirm the amount shown on the live request page before paying.

Start an ISP Limited Criminal History request
No Records Found still counts as a completed search. ISP says a no-record response is an official result and the search fee still applies.

Why “No Records Found” does not always mean no criminal case exists

A blank ISP result or MyCase search should be interpreted carefully.

Possible explanations include:

  • there is no disclosable Indiana criminal-history record
  • the case is sealed or expunged
  • the name or DOB was entered incorrectly
  • the case is in another county or state
  • the event was not fully reported to the statewide system
  • the case is confidential
  • the matter is juvenile and restricted
  • the case is federal rather than Indiana state court
Known Marion County event? Search MyCase and the Marion County Clerk even when an Indiana State Police name check gives a no-record result, because these systems answer different questions.

State prison records belong with Indiana Department of Correction

A person who was sentenced to an Indiana state correctional facility should be researched through the Indiana Department of Correction rather than the Marion County jail or Clerk.

The state corrections system can provide offender information for people under DOC jurisdiction, while MyCase remains the better source for the underlying criminal court case.

County jail vs state prison: a person awaiting trial at the Marion County jail may never appear in state-prison custody. Conversely, a sentenced state prisoner may no longer appear as a current Marion County detainee.

Warrant information should be verified through the court or Sheriff’s Office

Marion County Sheriff’s Office performs criminal warrant service, while the courts issue warrants in connection with criminal proceedings.

If MyCase shows a warrant-related court entry, verify current status with the court or the Sheriff’s Office rather than relying on a commercial warrant database.

If the warrant may concern you personally: use official court or Sheriff’s guidance to determine the next step. A stale third-party listing may not reflect recall, service or later court activity.

Marion County juvenile records are much more restricted

Juvenile case access is not handled like an ordinary adult criminal-record search. Marion County Clerk resources explain that juvenile files can require party status and valid identification.

Do not expect a normal MyCase search to reveal every juvenile matter. Indiana access rules protect juvenile and other confidential case information from ordinary public disclosure.

Indiana Second Chance Law can remove or restrict public criminal records

Indiana’s expungement law is primarily found in Indiana Code 35-38-9. Depending on the type and outcome of the case, a person may qualify to petition for expungement or sealing.

Indiana State Police is the central criminal-history repository. After a court grants qualifying relief, the verified petition and order are sent to ISP for processing.

Dismissal / acquittal

Automatic or expedited relief can apply

Current Indiana law includes provisions requiring expungement in certain dismissed, acquitted or vacated-case circumstances.

Arrest only

Petition may be available

Indiana law provides a route for some arrests with no pending charges after the applicable waiting period.

Conviction

Eligibility varies

Waiting periods, offense type and other statutory requirements determine whether relief is available.

Federal criminal cases in Indianapolis are searched separately

Federal prosecutions are not Marion County Superior Court cases. They are handled in the federal judiciary and should be searched through PACER.

Marion County is within the federal Southern District of Indiana. If you know the federal case number, search that court directly. If you do not know the court, PACER’s Case Locator can search the nationwide federal index.

Marion County search tips that make the process easier

Tip 01

Filter to Marion County

Indiana MyCase is statewide, so county filtering helps eliminate unrelated cases with similar names.

Tip 02

Save the cause number

Once you identify the correct case, use the case number for later Clerk requests instead of paying or searching by name repeatedly.

Tip 03

Read the disposition

Do not stop at the filed charge. Follow the chronological case summary until you understand the final outcome.

Tip 04

Recent arrest?

Custody information may appear before the court case is easy to locate. Check the Sheriff’s route first, then MyCase.

Tip 05

State check ≠ court file

Indiana State Police Limited Criminal History is useful, but the Marion County court file contains the detailed case history.

Tip 06

Old case missing?

Contact the Clerk. Online public access does not guarantee that every historical document is remotely available.

Tip 07

Use sounds-like carefully

MyCase sounds-like searching helps with uncertain spelling but can produce more false matches.

Tip 08

Sealed result?

A missing result may reflect Indiana expungement or restricted access rather than proof that a case never existed.

Tip 09

Federal matter?

Move to PACER. Indiana MyCase does not include federal prosecutions.

Common questions about Marion County criminal records

Public case searching through MyCase is generally available without a per-search criminal-case fee. Copy or certification charges can apply when you request official documents from the Clerk.

No. A booking reflects custody after an arrest or other detention event. Check MyCase for the charges formally filed and the final court disposition.
