Harris County Criminal Court Records Search: Cases & Dockets

Harris County, Texas official court-record guide

Find the right Harris County criminal case, docket or record source

Harris County makes a large amount of criminal court information available online, but the correct search depends on what you need. The Harris County District Clerk maintains official records for felony Criminal District Courts and Class A and B misdemeanor County Criminal Courts at Law. Justice Court and municipal Class C cases use separate systems, while jail information comes from the Sheriff’s Office and statewide criminal-history information comes from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Location: Harris County, Texas Information checked: September 23, 2026 Research: Official court and government sources
Do not treat a filing as a conviction. A criminal complaint, charging instrument, warrant, arrest or jail booking does not establish guilt. Read the final court disposition before relying on the record.

Which Harris County record system should you use?

Harris County’s criminal-record system is unusual enough that it helps to identify the exact type of record before searching. Unlike some Texas counties, the Harris County District Clerk maintains court records for both Criminal District Courts and the County Criminal Courts at Law.

District Clerk

Felony cases

Criminal District Courts hear felony cases. Their official case records are maintained by the Harris County District Clerk.

District Clerk

Class A/B misdemeanors

County Criminal Courts at Law hear Class A and Class B misdemeanor cases. Those records are also maintained through the Harris County District Clerk.

Justice / Municipal Courts

Class C cases

Justice of the Peace and municipal Class C misdemeanor cases do not appear in the District Clerk’s standard criminal-record search.

HCSO

Current jail custody

Search Harris County Sheriff’s Office records when the immediate question is whether someone is currently incarcerated in the county jail.

Texas DPS

Statewide criminal history

A Harris County case search covers Harris County only. Use Texas DPS for statewide public conviction and deferred-adjudication information.

Federal Court

Federal prosecution

Federal cases in Harris County are generally filed in the Houston Division of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas and searched through PACER.

Felony and misdemeanor criminal courts in Harris County

Felony

Criminal District Courts

Harris County Criminal District Courts hear felony criminal cases. Case details, court costs, filings, case documents and related public information are maintained by the Harris County District Clerk.

Class A / B misdemeanor

County Criminal Courts at Law

Harris County County Criminal Courts at Law hear Class A and Class B misdemeanors and certain appeals from Justice and Municipal Courts.

Important Harris County distinction: you do not need to switch to the County Clerk simply because the case is a misdemeanor. Harris County’s District Clerk records system covers both felony District Courts and County Criminal Courts at Law.

A faster option: My Harris County Case

Harris County also provides a simplified My Harris County Case search through the District Clerk.

The simplified tool currently asks for:

  • last name
  • date of birth
Useful when you are checking your own case: start with My Harris County Case when you do not know the case number. Move to the full District Clerk record search when you need documents, docket filters or more advanced case information.

How to search Harris County criminal court dockets

The District Clerk provides a dedicated docket-search section within its public records system. This is useful when you need to know which cases are set in a particular court or on a specific date.

Available docket-search fields include

  • start date and end date
  • court
  • court type
  • case/cause number
  • docket type
  • SPN
  • bondsman license number
  • case/offense type
Searching a past docket? Harris County says docket results default from the current date when no date range is entered. Add a start and end date when you are researching a past court setting.

Search Harris County dockets

Same-day felony and misdemeanor filings

Harris County District Clerk maintains a useful new-filings page that shows charging instruments filed and processed in Harris County District and County Criminal Courts.

When an image becomes available, the District Clerk allows users to view the new charging instrument and print an uncertified copy through the same-day filing page.

Local research shortcut: if you are checking a case that was filed today, start with the District Clerk’s new-filings area. A charging-instrument image may appear there before you need to work through the ordinary copy-purchase process.
Charging instrument ≠ conviction. An indictment, information or complaint tells you what was filed. You still need the case docket and final disposition to determine how the prosecution ended.

What can you see in a Harris County criminal case file?

Public criminal case information available through the District Clerk can include, where legally public:

Case details

Core case information

Case number, court, case status, parties, offense information, filing dates and other basic case details.

Docket

Register of events

Court settings, filings, orders, pleas, hearings and other events can help explain how a case progressed.

Documents

Electronic images

Publicly available filings and court documents may be viewed or purchased electronically when the document is available and not legally restricted.

Not every court document is public. Sealed, confidential or otherwise restricted material will not necessarily be available through the public portal.

Harris County District Clerk Criminal Customer Service provides several record-certification services, including:

  • criminal background checks
  • certificate / letter of disposition
  • no-record letters
  • certified case documents

If you search using a person’s first name, last name and date of birth and no public case is found, the District Clerk’s system can provide an option to request a certified letter when the required information is supplied.

Current District Clerk FAQ: a certificate of record search is listed at $6. Verify the current amount before submitting an order because clerk fees can change.

Historical Harris County criminal court records

Harris County’s criminal records go back much further than the modern online criminal-justice system. The District Clerk preserves historical criminal court material dating back to the nineteenth century.

The online historical-record search supports criminal-record research using information such as:

  • case/cause number
  • style / names of people involved
  • date range

When those identifiers are unavailable, the District Clerk says a primary information search may be required and currently carries an additional $5 fee.

The Historical Documents Room provides public viewing of original historical materials. Requested copies are currently listed at $1 per page.

Public criminal datasets for research

The District Clerk also publishes downloadable public criminal datasets, including recent filings and dispositions as well as historical criminal data grouped by periods beginning with 1990–1994 and continuing through current records.

Harris County public datasets

Harris County search-warrant records

Search warrants are different from arrest warrants. Harris County District Clerk’s record-search system includes dedicated search-warrant search fields.

Available search fields currently include information such as:

  • warrant court
  • warrant description
  • unique warrant ID
  • search-warrant officer
  • street number
  • street name
  • city
  • ZIP code
Access can be restricted. A search warrant may be sealed or otherwise unavailable to the public depending on the warrant’s status, court order and applicable law.

Search-warrant returns and related criminal filings are handled through Harris County District Clerk Criminal Customer Service.

Class C misdemeanors: Harris County Justice Courts and municipal courts

One of the easiest mistakes is assuming that the District Clerk’s criminal search covers every low-level criminal or traffic matter inside Harris County. It does not.

Justice Courts

Harris County Justices of the Peace

Harris County Justice Courts handle various Class C misdemeanor and traffic matters. The Justice Courts provide their own case-and-docket search through the county’s Odyssey Justice Court portal.

Harris County Justice Courts

City of Houston

Houston Municipal Court

City of Houston Class C offenses and municipal citations use the Houston Municipal Courts system rather than the Harris County District Clerk’s standard criminal search.

Houston Municipal Courts

Outside Houston city limits? Harris County includes many municipalities. A citation issued by another city’s police department may belong to that municipality’s own court system.

Harris County jail and incarcerated-person search

Use the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Online Public District & County Criminal Records Inquiry when you need current county custody information.

The HCSO search currently accepts several combinations, including:

  • SPN number
  • last name
  • last name + first name
  • last name + date of birth
Sheriff information

Incarcerated Person Information: 713-755-5300
Information Line: 346-286-1600
Non-emergency: 713-221-6000

Jail record ≠ criminal conviction. A person can appear in a jail system before charges are formally filed, after a warrant arrest, while awaiting court or for another custody reason. Use the court docket for the prosecution outcome.

Harris County arrest-warrant search

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office provides an online warrant-search tool focused on Class A and Class B misdemeanor warrants and other processes issued by a Harris County Criminal Court at Law.

The HCSO warrant search accepts:

  • first name
  • last name
  • SPN
  • date of birth
  • partial-name searches

HCSO misdemeanor warrant search

Felony warrant information: HCSO directs users seeking felony and broader criminal warrant information to the Harris County District Clerk’s Search Our Records and Documents system.
If the warrant may concern you personally, verify it directly. Online data can change as warrants are served, recalled or otherwise updated.

Harris County Sheriff’s reports and police records

Court records and law-enforcement reports are different records. If a Harris County Sheriff’s deputy created the incident or offense report, use the Sheriff’s records-request process rather than asking the District Clerk for a police report.

Harris County Sheriff’s open-record request materials ask requesters to provide as much identifying information as possible, including:

  • offense / incident report number
  • name and date of birth of involved person
  • incident location
  • incident date
  • description of the record requested
HCSO Records Request
Harris County Sheriff’s Office
Attention: Legal Department
1200 Baker Street
Houston, TX 77002
Do not use the Sheriff’s general open-record form for a criminal background check. HCSO’s form specifically excludes background checks. Use Harris County District Clerk court records for county court history or Texas DPS when statewide criminal-history information is required.

If Houston Police Department created the report instead, use the City of Houston / HPD public-information process rather than HCSO.

Texas DPS statewide criminal-history search

Harris County’s court search only covers Harris County court records. For statewide public Texas criminal history, use the Texas DPS Criminal History Conviction Name Search.

Under Texas law, qualifying conviction and deferred-adjudication information can be made available through the public criminal-history system.

Current online search price: Texas DPS’s current online system uses search credits costing $1 per search credit. Credit-card purchases also carry the transaction charges displayed by DPS.

Create a DPS public account

Public users can create an account for the Texas criminal-history search.

Purchase search credits

Each submitted search consumes a credit, including a search that returns no matching record.

Enter accurate identifying information

DPS requires first and last name and recommends adding middle/maiden name and full date of birth whenever available.

Preview possible matches carefully

DPS uses exact and similar-sounding matching. Do not assume the first name match is automatically the person you intended to search.

Name searches can misidentify people. Texas DPS warns that name and date-of-birth searches are not guaranteed to positively identify a person. Fingerprints are the stronger method for linking a record to a specific individual.

Fingerprint-based Texas criminal-history review

If you are reviewing your own Texas criminal history or need stronger identity verification, Texas DPS provides a fingerprint-based personal review process.

DPS currently lists:

  • $15 DPS fingerprint-based criminal-history record-check fee
  • an additional fingerprinting charge when using the FAST / IdentoGO process
Best use case: use fingerprint-based personal review when a name-based result may belong to someone else, when you are disputing criminal-history information, or when identity accuracy is especially important.

Texas prison and offender records

Someone in Harris County Jail is not necessarily a Texas Department of Criminal Justice offender. County custody and state prison custody are separate systems.

Use the official TDCJ Offender Search for people under the Texas state corrections system.

TDCJ currently supports searches by:

  • name
  • SID number
  • TDCJ number
  • partial matches using an asterisk
Simple rule:
Harris County jail → HCSO jail search.
Texas state correctional custody → TDCJ Offender Search.

Harris County expunction and nondisclosure records

Texas expunction and nondisclosure are different legal processes. Eligibility depends on the offense, case outcome, waiting periods and other statutory rules.

Expunction in Harris County

Harris County District Clerk currently directs people with eligibility questions to the Harris County District Attorney at 713-274-5816.

The District Clerk says expunction petitions may be filed through:

Harris County Civil Courthouse
Civil/Family Post Trial
201 Caroline Street, Suite 250
Houston, TX 77002
Processing time: the District Clerk’s current FAQ says it takes a minimum of approximately three months for an expunction order to become final.

Petition for nondisclosure

Harris County Criminal Customer Service accepts qualifying pro se petitions for nondisclosure. The District Clerk FAQ currently lists a $350 filing fee for a Petition for Non-Disclosure of Deferred Adjudication in District and County Courts.

Do not assume an expunction and nondisclosure have the same effect. They have different eligibility rules and different consequences for public access.

Harris County juvenile court records

The Harris County District Clerk is the official record custodian for Juvenile District Courts as well as Criminal, Civil and Family District Courts.

Juvenile records, however, can be subject to confidentiality and access restrictions that do not apply to an ordinary adult criminal court case.

Do not assume that a missing juvenile record means no juvenile proceeding exists. The legal rules governing public access to juvenile information are substantially different from ordinary adult criminal cases.

Federal criminal cases in Harris County

A federal prosecution is not a Harris County criminal case. Harris County is included in the Houston Division of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas.

Federal case dockets and electronic filings are generally searched through PACER.

Harris County criminal court search tips that save time

Tip 01

Use the District Clerk for both felony and A/B misdemeanor cases

Harris County’s structure differs from counties where misdemeanor records are handled through a County Clerk criminal division.

Tip 02

Save the cause number

Once you find it, use the cause number for copy orders, docket searches and customer-service requests.

Tip 03

Use My Harris County Case for a simple self-search

Last name plus date of birth can be easier than navigating the full advanced-record search.

Tip 04

Use a date range for past dockets

Without a date range, the District Clerk docket tool starts from the current date.

Tip 05

Recent filing? Check same-day charging instruments

Harris County publishes new criminal filings and may provide a temporary free image of the filing.

Tip 06

Class C case? Leave the District Clerk search

Justice Court and municipal Class C cases use their own systems.

Tip 07

Jail lookup is not a disposition search

Follow a jail result into the District Clerk case record to determine the prosecution outcome.

Tip 08

Use Texas DPS for statewide history

A Harris County search cannot reveal all criminal-history records from elsewhere in Texas.

Tip 09

Search historical records separately

Very old cases can require historical indexes, archival records or an appointment at the Historical Documents Room.

Using Harris County criminal records for employment, housing or other decisions

Public court information can be useful for personal research, but employment, tenant screening, credit, insurance, licensing and similar eligibility decisions can involve additional federal and state requirements.

A court-record search is not automatically an FCRA-compliant consumer report. How information is obtained, verified, reported and used can matter under the Fair Credit Reporting Act and other applicable laws.
